11189 Two Insurance Policies for Whaling Bark Montgomery
Product Description
Two insurance policies issued for the barque Montgomery and her outfits, on a whaling voyage to and from New Bedford commencing August 21, 1855, and continuing during the voyage for 4 years, the policies expiring on August 21, 1859. They were issued by the Fairhaven Mutual Marine Insurance Company.
The first policy for the amount of $8000 is dated August 21, 1855 and notes that loss would be payable to Swift and Allen for the account of whom it may concern. The vessel is valued at $10,000 and outfits at $17,000.
The second policy for the amount of $500 is dated October 19, 1855 and is for the account of Jacob Forster. In this document, the vessel was valued at $14,000 and her outfits at $21,000.
The Montgomery, built in 1845 sailed for the Pacific Ocean on August 23, 1855 under command of Capt. William B. Chapman and returned on June 18, 1858, before the expiration of the policy. Swift and Allen were the managing owner or agent of the vessel. On November 19, 1856 the third mate and his boat crew were lost, fast to a whale. The log of this voyage is at the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
