Product Description
14462 Clifford W. Ashley; The Yankee Whaler; Houghton Mifflin; 1926; First Edition, one of 1625 copies; with an introduction by Robert Cushman Murphy. Hard bound. Numerous color and black and white illustrations of paintings and drawings by the author as well as photographs of scrimshaw, whalecraft, gear and other facets of the whaling industry. There is an extensive glossary of whaling terms and a bibliography of whaling books. A very nice, clean copy.
Born in New Bedford, the author, a well known marine artist, had both knowledge of and a keen interest in whaling. In 1904 he shipped out in the whaling bark Sunbeam. Though the industry was on the wane, its methods had changed little since its early days. This book, considered one of the most definitive studies of whaling extant, is based on his first hand experiences and virtually all aspects of the business are discussed.
