Product Description
This is a wonderful and rare early Nantucket sailor boy whirligig, attributed to William H. Chase (1850-1930). He wears a wooden hat with copper ribbon. Though showing considerable weathering, much of the original paint remains. The paddles appear to be original. There is a small chip at the end of his nose. Oversized, measuring 20 1/4 in. tall, 14 in. wide, with body thickness of about 3/4 in. Late 19th to early 20th C. A very similar example attributed to William H. Chase is in the collection of the Nantucket Historical Association and is illustrated in The Decorative Arts and Crafts of Nantucket, Plate LXII by Charles and Mary Carpenter.
