William Newton Bartholomew (1822-1898) was born in Boston, where he became the first professor of drawing in the Boston public school system. After retirement he became an itinerant watercolorist in Vermont, and in the summers in Nantucket. His scenes of Nantucket , which he considered the "queerest and quaintest place in the wide wide world", are scarce. See: Michael Jehle, Picturing Nantucket.
