Product Description
This antique whaling spade is marked DEAN & DRIGGS CAST STEEL and also bears a ship mark SAG, either for the Alfred Gibbs or Ansel Gibbs, both New Bedford whaling ships. This is very unusual as, unlike harpoons which frequently displayed vessel marks, spades were rarely so identified. The partnership of Dean and Driggs existed from 1847 until Joseph Dean retired in 1876. The wooden pole is a later replacement. The spade is bent near the start of the socket, probably from use as a pry bar after its whaling days . OA length 55 in. metal length 16 3/8 in. Ca. 1860's to 70's. (The CAST STEEL mark suggests a date after 1860.) Very nice condition.
