2696 American double flue whaling iron. This harpoon is in good condition with moderate pitting and showing signs of use in the whale fishery. Mounted in authentic fashion with an “iron strap” and marlin covering on the socket and appropriate marlin seizings to the replicated pole. The head is 3 3/4 in. wide. Length of iron, 40 in. Overall length 107 1/2 in. An early example of a scarce style harpoon with unreadable ship, boat and maker’s marks. Ca 1830-40.
Double flue harpoons are scarce, as the industry began using toggle irons almost exclusively after the mid 19th century.
