Antique Scrimshaw Tooth; Lady of the Lake/Warship

Product Description

3002 This finely engraved impressive scrimshaw tooth is new to the market, having been owned by three generations of a Delaware family. It is engraved on the obverse with a starboard quarter view of a 74-gun ship-of-the-line flying an American flag at her gaff, a commodore’s pennant at the foremast, a homeward bound pennant at the main mast and a third pennant at the mizzen mast.

A scene titled “Lady of the Lake” depicted on the reverse is undoubtedly taken from a period illustration of the legend of an enchantress giving King Arthur his sword. "Excalibur".

Ca. 1840’s. 8 in. long and 3 1/2 in. wide with a marvelous patina.
