14483a This is a truly wonderful scrimshaw sewing box. Made of wood, there are inlays of whale ivory and mother of pearl. The designs in the openings in the rectangular panels on the top are created with mica placed behind the various cutouts, which include sperm whales, stars, whaleboat, triangles, etc. 12 in. wide x 15 1/2 in. high x 8 in. deep.
Attributed to Sag Harbor Whaling Master Barney Green, ca. 1850. From a collection of various scrimshaw items descended in the Green family. Restoration of the spool spindles and several inlays has been done with material from Green’s effects.
