Antique Scrimshaw Tooth with Rare Subject

14448 This delightful antique scrimshaw tooth is engraved on the obverse with a full figure portrait of a young girl standing on a foot stool, holding a flower in her outstretched right hand.  The reverse shows a seated nursing mother. There are several age cracks which do not detract from the charm of this tooth depicting a very unusual subject.  5 3/4 in. tall.

This tooth relates to another on page 50 in Hellman, Nina; A Mariner's Fancy, on which is engraved the same young girl, if not by the same hand then certainly from the same image source.
