This compass would have hung in the captain's cabin on a ship, enabling him to see the directon of his vessel without going up on deck. Diameter at foremost flange, 6 1/2 in.; depth of compass case 4 in.; overall depth including bracket 6 3/4 in. Mid 19th C. Nice condition with good patina. This type of compass is quite scarce.
